Connection Handover and Interrupted Rounds

Mobile connections change base stations as a device moves, and the handover is not always seamless. The transition is designed to be invisible and frequently is not. For a game in progress this can produce a visible interruption.

The critical question is what happens to a round caught by the interruption. Outcomes are determined and continue reading recorded server-side regardless of the client’s connection. This applies to software games and to live tables alike.

The behaviour differs between the two in one respect. A software game will wait indefinitely for continue reading the player to return and complete a decision. A live table runs on a schedule and applies a default action when the timer expires.

That default is worth knowing in advance. In blackjack, failing to act typically results in standing on the current total. A disconnection during a decision therefore has a predictable consequence rather than an arbitrary one.

Bets already accepted stand regardless of connectivity. The account is credited or debited according to the outcome. Reconnecting shows the settled result.

Switching between wireless and cellular causes the same interruption as a cell handover. The transition between network types is not seamless. This is a common cause of interruptions that appear to have no explanation.

For sessions where interruption matters, a few choices reduce it. A stationary position on a single connection type is the most reliable arrangement. Where the connection is known to be marginal, avoiding timed decisions altogether is the practical response.

One setting reduces handover interruptions directly. Disabling automatic switching between wireless and cellular keeps the device on one network for the session. The trade-off is straightforward. A locked connection will not fall back if the chosen network fails. For a short session on a known-good network, locking is worthwhile; for a long one on a marginal connection, it is not.
