Laminate or Hardwood: Which One Should You Choose for Your Home?

Before anything else, evaluate the humidity of the concrete. A basic moisture test such as taping a square of plastic to the floor for 24 to 48 hours can show any moisture problem. Address any leaks before installing anything.

Laminate is another great option. The hard melamine surface is highly resistant to claw marks, in many cases more than vinyl. Select products with a high abrasion rating plus water-resistant edges for the best performance.

Hardwood remains the traditional favourite. It brings warmth that many buyers love, and it may be refinished more than once over the decades. Being able to refinish it allows quality hardwood can last for decades. It also adds resale value in many markets.

Is hardwood an option? Absolutely, though make careful choices. Dense species like hickory and white oak resist dents better, while matte finishes or distressed or hand-scraped textures hide small scratches far better than a shiny finish.

Moisture protection is also a critical function, particularly on concrete slabs. Concrete subfloors may release humidity for years, and an underlay with a built-in vapour barrier keeps laminate and wood floors from damage.

When shopping, check the veneer thickness. A deeper veneer lets you refinish the floor in the future, increasing the life of your floor. Remember to maintain humidity between roughly 35 and 55 percent with a humidifier in winter.

This is where engineered wood makes a difference. Instead of using a single solid piece of wood, engineered wood is made of multiple layers: a genuine wood veneer bonded to a plywood or HDF core. That construction reduces the natural movement of wood.

Modern laminate has evolved dramatically. Premium laminate feature high-definition images and textured surfaces that appear remarkably realistic. The tough top layer keeps it very resistant to scuffs and scratches, and Tw.8Fun.Net it costs lower. Several laminates now include improved water resistance.

Turning a basement into living space is one of the best ways to add living space and value to your home. Yet below-grade spaces come with specific problems: concrete slabs, humidity and colder floors. The wrong floor may result in mildew, warping and expensive replacements.

Engineered wood is a possibility when you prefer a genuine wood surface. Because of its stable core, it resists moisture swings much better than solid hardwood, and solid wood is a poor choice below grade. Install it with an appropriate underlay for the best results.

Indoor humidity is also very important. In winter, the air inside can become too dry, leading to hardwood to shrink and cracks to appear. A whole-house humidifier keeping indoor humidity around 35 to 50 percent benefits your floors as well as your health.

Houses across Canada go through dramatic seasonal swings from season to season. In winter, heating systems dehydrate the air; during summer, humidity rise sharply. For natural wood, that constant movement often leads to gaps, crowning and movement.

One of its main jobs is to provide sound reduction. Floors that are not glued down may sound noisy if installed directly on the subfloor. A good acoustic underlay reduces that hollow sound, something that is especially useful in apartments and condos where building rules may require minimum sound ratings.

Luxury vinyl plank is the first recommendation for busy homes. It’s water-resistant, so pet accidents become easy to clean up. A durable top layer will help reduce scratches, while the softer surface is quieter than tile.

Luxury vinyl plank is often the top option for lower levels. Many LVP collections are fully water-resistant, meaning they won’t be damaged when moisture appears. Rigid core planks can also tolerate slight unevenness in the slab.

Canadian winters is magical, but winter is rough on your floors. Snow, calcium chloride, gravel and low indoor humidity can damage even the best floors if left unchecked. With some simple precautions, it is easy to keep your flooring looking great all season long.

Ceramic and porcelain tile is virtually waterproof, but it tends to feel cold unless you add in-floor heating. Carpet, meanwhile, feels warm yet can absorb humidity, so rugs over a hard floor are usually a better solution.
